Pictograms are commonly used in Westpac interfaces. They are implemented as scalable vector graphics (SVGs), this ensures the highest quality rendering on all devices. Use them to assist with visual communication.
Informative pictograms
Informative pictograms take iconography to the next level due to the greater degree of detail. They are visual aids to accompany a piece of text to help communicate an idea, feature, or function and should not be used on their own. Access the master set of pictogram files here (this is a secure link).
Please note: These pictograms are Brand approved, for correct usage or to request additions please refer to these pictogram process documents (this is a secure link).
Pictograms are wonderful devices that can help sighted users understand a product or piece of communication faster while added a degree of brand recognition and recall.
When using Informative pictograms, consider whether or not an icon would better serve the purpose, particularly for task based functions.
As Decorative pictograms are so vibrant, their use needs to be carefully considered as they could overwhelm the page, screen, or experience. Typically, they can draw attention to a product, enhance brand presence on the screen, celebrate a milestone or moment, and do not require accompanying text.
Visual design
The pictogram sets were created in accordance with the latest brand guidelines. The visual language needs to be as clear and concise as the metaphor otherwise the intent is lost.
Care has been taken to design these with a small degree of depth, while establishing a visual language which can be replicated.
For production, they have all been created in a centred, square format to suit as many use cases as possible (text left, right, and below). For details on how to design and deliver a pictogram ready for production, contact the GEL team.
Dos and don’ts
Do follow the GEL guidelines for creation
Do use brand colours and create for multi-brand (ex Illustrative)
Don’t abuse their use
Don’t create new styles
Where is this available?
The GEL design System will always have the latest component versions and additions, however new components and changes to existing components may roll out to other platforms at different times.
